KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CREATING A LOGO

The logo of your organisation is your introduction to potential new customers. Getting it right therefore is incredibly important! Here’s our top tips for making sure your logo stands out from the crowd.

Know your brand. Ask yourself, “who are we?”, “what is our purpose?”, and “what makes us different?”. Knowing your brand inside and out before you begin is key to creating a visual identity that aligns with your purpose and values.

Take a look at the competition. Changes are by researching logos of similar organisations you’ll see patterns in design – and depending on your purpose, you may want to follow the crowd – or not!

Think about heritage and nostalgia. There have been so many stories of brands losing favour with audiences for changing a much loved logo! It’s important to consider your existing audience and how they relate to your brand and your history before you start making drastic changes.

It’s not all about the logo. Yes, whilst this blog is specifically about logo design, the logo is only one piece in the puzzle! Think carefully about how the logo will fit in with your wider strategy for communication.

THE THREE FUNDAMENTALS TO GOOD MARKETING

What makes good marketing? You can spend hours thinking and researching for an answer, and there’s countless blogs about how to make your marketing strategy effective (we’ve written a fair few ourselves!). But when it comes down to it, there are 3 fundamentals to good marketing – and here they are.

Rule 1: Make your brand centre stage. Your creative output can be the most powerfully engaging piece of art, but if your brand doesn’t hold centre stage you’ll be forgotten. Make sure your brand is well woven throughout all of your communications to ensure you get the credit – and the customers.

Rule 2: Emotion is key. The best creative speaks to audiences like they are human. They use humour, nostalgia and drama to speak to our emotions, and that’s what makes good creative stick. How well do you know your audience and what makes them tick? Consider your audience carefully and how you can relate to them on a very human level.

Rule 3: And repeat! When you find a winning formula, stick with it. If a piece of creative or messaging works well, simply keep using it. Brands become associated with certain phrases or colours after a certain amount of time, which can have huge benefits to brand recognition.

HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR AT WORK

Good communication is key in the workplace to ensuring an effective team. Are you doing your bit to ensure you’re a good communicator at work? Take a look at our top tips.

Everybody’s different! People communicate in different ways and benefit from different communication methods. Utilise all channels available to you to communicate in the most effective way with your colleagues, depending on their preferences and the urgency of the situation.

Make your communication worthwhile. Think about what you need to say, be clear in your communication, and try not to beat around the bush too much – small talk is nice, but can disrupt colleagues who might be trying to work towards tight deadlines!

Leave your emotions at home. Regardless of the situation, you must never lose your cool. Stay calm and controlled throughout every conversation with your colleagues and if you feel your emotions slipping, take a break and get some fresh air.

What are your top tips for communicating at work?

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL MARKETER?

Marketing is a highly competitive and creative sector – and whilst we all come to marketing with different ideas and experiences, there are some traits that can be found in all successful marketers. So what is it that makes people successful when it comes to marketing?

Start with empathy. The best marketing campaigns connect with their audiences and understand the drives, likes and desires of their target market. Taking a step back, and looking at your organisation through the eyes of your customer is one of the best ways to create a campaign that has impact.

NEVER stop learning. The most successful marketers are constantly curious and never stop learning about new techniques and new insights – only by continuing to learn and improve can marketers have impact that will stand the test of time.

Balance tactics with long term vision. Absolutely things will happen that mean you have to implement short term tactics to seize the win, but great marketers make time for long term planning and development of their brand vision. A short term / long term balance is key!

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE PERFECT WORK / LIFE BALANCE

Today’s world can be pretty hectic. And with the internet and mobile continually connecting us, plus more of us now working from home, workers are finding themselves more and more working outside of core hours and losing their work/life balance. So how can you bring your world into perfect harmony?

Plan your day and finish on time. Of course there will be times when a little flexibility is needed, but you should always aim to finish work on time – plan your day as much as possible to ensure you finish work when you expect to as much as possible.

Leave the work at the office. Switch off all work devices when you finish if you can – checking your emails at 3am is not a good way to relax! This can be more tricky with more of us working from home than ever before, but still very important.

Work smart. Planning your day, hour by hour, means you’re likely to achieve more tasks during the day than you would without a plan.

Take your breaks. Make sure you take your allocated breaks at work, otherwise you might find yourself struggling to complete your tasks effectively.

Accept perfection isn’t always possible. Yes, we should strive to do our best at work, but it must be reasonable.

RETURNING TO WORK AFTER MATERNITY LEAVE

In today’s busy market, it’s vital that women returning to work after maternity leave plan their return to work effectively to ensure they have the best possible experience. Here’s how.

First there’s childcare. It can feel overwhelming but make sure you plan and consider childcare well in advance. Ask questions of providers to ensure you make the choice that’s right for you. You can also visit the government website to see if you’re entitled to any support with childcare costs.

Remember how good you are. Yes, you can feel like you’ve forgotten everything about the world of work, but if you did it once, you can do it again. Don’t underestimate your skills!

Think flexible. It’s a good idea to ask potential employers about flexible working – which doesn’t necessarily mean working part time.

Be forgiving. It’s natural that you’ll find it tough in the first few weeks – so be kind to yourself and try to take things one step at a time!

Don’t forget your network. Your family and friends will be there to support you every step of the way – make sure you keep in touch!

HOW CAN YOU PLAN FOR CAREER PROGRESSION?

It’s important to be ambitious in your career, and having a plan in place to progress your career can be a great way to develop at work. So how can you improve your chances for career progression and promotion?

What’s their perception? It’s good to try and understand how people perceive you at work, and whether or not you need to adapt the way you approach your work to be as effective as possible.

Be proactive. If opportunities for training and development come your way, make sure you volunteer. If these opportunities are few and far between, ask your line manager for more opportunities to develop.

Make your voice heard. If you have an opinion on how your team can work better and more effectively, speak up. Don’t wait for someone else to take the spotlight!

Consider all feedback. Any and all feedback can be useful to you – good or bad. Take it on board and learn from it.

Explore what’s out there. Opportunities for progression may not always exist with your current employer – if you’re ambitious, see what other opportunities are out there!

HOW TO RESPOND ON SOCIAL MEDIA – THE RIGHT WAY!

Social media is a wonderful thing – most of the time! The great thing about social media is that is has given customers another effective and accessible way to reach out to brands they love (and hate) – with interesting consequences! Knowing how to respond to happy and unhappy customers and the subtle differences is important – here’s our guide for social media responses.

Hello Happy Customer! It’s great when customers say positive things online about your company or brand – and it can be an important way to attract new customers too. Make sure you respond to positive comments by saying thank you first and foremost, and show an interest in them – ask about the product or service they have used, and their answer may even inform future content. Sharing and liking positive comments is always popular too.

Oh dear. An Unhappy Customer. It happens from time to time – first things first, it’s important to apologise. Depending on the nature of the complaint you may want to move the discussion to private messages to find a solution. Although it is important to respond you shouldn’t be drawn into long complaints or arguments – respond once to offer a solution and leave it there.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT CHRISTMAS ADVERT?

Christmas adverts hold a special place in our hearts, showcasing the magic of the season. But what makes a great one? It all boils down to a mix of storytelling, emotion, and authenticity. Adverts like John Lewis’ Christmas campaigns highlight the importance of a compelling narrative that tugs at the heartstrings, while maintaining a connection to the brand’s message.

It’s not just about selling a product – it’s about evoking a genuine emotional response. Think of Sainsbury’s 2014 advert, “Christmas is for Sharing,” which re-enacted the 1914 Christmas truce. It struck a chord with its heartfelt story and historical relevance.

Timing is also crucial. Launching your Christmas advert at the right moment can create anticipation and buzz. In the UK, the Christmas advert season typically kicks off in November, allowing brands ample time to build up festive cheer. We’ve been loving the Christmas vibes all month – we’re well and truly in the Christmas spirit!

So, crafting a remarkable Christmas advert is about blending creativity, timing, and genuine emotion to resonate deeply with viewers and leave a lasting impression.
