JOB SEEKING WHILST STILL EMPLOYED

In most cases job seekers will still be employed when they first embark on their job search. It can make things more challenging, but searching for a new job whilst you’re still in employment is acceptable, as long as it is done in a correct and respectful way. So how can you make sure you get things right?

Keep it to yourself. Don’t discuss your job search with other colleagues, even if you feel you can speak with them in confidence. There’s obviously the chance for your intention to become public, but colleagues may avoid involving you in projects if they think you’ll soon be leaving.

Try to schedule interviews outside of working hours. More companies these days understand that job seekers who are employed want to maintain a good relationship with their current employer and can offer interviews outside of office hours. Asking if it is possible is perfectly acceptable and shows your respect. If it’s really not possible, take a day’s leave, always respecting your current employers procedures. It will show potential new employers you are local and respectful. Good attributes to display when you’re job seeking!

Saying goodbye. Once you’ve secured your new role, give your notice in writing, offering support to make the process as smooth as possible. Leaving your job with dignity and respect is really important, as you never know if you’ll need the contacts you’ve gained whilst working there again.
