HAVE YOU GOT TOO MUCH EXPERIENCE?

When looking for new jobs, it’s important to get your CV and/or application right. This is your first chance to impress your potential new employer, after all! However, if you’ve got a long career history and a lot to say, you might struggle to fit everything on the recommended two page maximum for your CV! So what’s the solution?

Make it relevant. Include only your most relevant experience on your CV, tailored to the job you’re applying for, to really stand out from the crowd. If you have worked in a number of roles irrelevant to the sector you work in now, you can list them as a collective, such as:

“Various marketing positions, between (date) and (date)”.

Are there gaps in your CV? If there are gaps in your employment history, it’s always best to account for it. A good way to elaborate on any employment gaps is to address it in your cover letter.

Make other information available. Give employers the option to request further employment history, if they need a full record of your employment to date. Your CV should be an introductory tool, demonstrating why you are best suited to the role in question.
