Have you noticed the change in today’s employment market? Constant bombardment of agency calls, interviews coming out of your ears – sound familiar?

Today’s market is managed by you, The Candidate. Especially in the marketing and creative sectors, you’ll find that your skills are in high demand, and you may be considering 2 or 3 or even more vacancies at once.

So with all this activity, how do you manage your job search to make sure you make the right choice when it comes to accepting a new role?

Review the job description / company thoroughly. Before you apply for a role, you should be given access to a full job description and be given information about the company including the company website to peruse. Check, check and double check – Make sure every part of the vacancy is of interest, make sure all of your questions are answered, before taking the first big step. With all the opportunities available to you, you won’t want to waste any time with something that isn’t quite right.

Keep an open mind. You might get an offer for a job quickly and feel the need to cancel any other ongoing interviews. Stop right there! If you do cancel other interviews and take the first offer on the table, you might miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime, and if things don’t work out in your new role, you’ll always be left wondering “What If…?”. Use your time wisely, investigate every opportunity before making any concrete decision. Any company you are interviewing with will understand your motives. And with an offer already on the table, what have you got to lose?

Update the Recruiter / Hiring Manager. Any changes, any job offers, let them know. Even in an interview setting, it’s always best to be honest – it will help them establish what sort of time frame you are working to and when you will need a decision by, which is crucial if you are considering multiple opportunities.
